I've read just about every motorcycle travel book in existence. This one is the best I've ever read. I followed Simon's blog and found it fascinating, so I picked up a copy of the book as soon as it was out. It's a great read. His perceptions (and descriptions) made me feel like I was riding with him.

Other folks have written about riding long distances on motorcycles; few (if any) have done it on small bikes. And he did it through the Americas without a chase vehicle and all kinds of external support. There's a big difference between zooming along on a big street bike versus putting along at 35 mph on a little bike. I found the whole concept wildly appealing, and having ridden big bikes in other countries, I found the idea of a trip like Simon's on a small bike appealing. I think it is more of a challenge than doing this kind of travel on a big bike. Simon is a real adventurer with a love of life, and that comes across in his writing. He's not trying to impress anyone.

The other aspect of his book I found greatly appealing is he spent time in each area and got to know the people there. He didn't just blow through different time zones and write about the scenery. I feel like I got to know the people he met, too.

After reading his blog and his book, I sent Simon an email and we became friends. Last year, Simon, myself, and three of my friends rode the length of Baja and back on 150cc bikes. It was great. He is exactly like he is in the book. He's real.

I don't understand why one of the other reviewers didn't finish Simon's book. I thought it was great. You won't be disappointed with this one...trust me, it's a wonderful story told by a man who knows how to write.

Great First Person Account

I purchased this book as a result of reading his Kindle book of his later "return" trip. It is an engrossing read for me for several reasons, 1) his age (mid 70's), 2) his bike (a very small 125 cc Honda), 3) his descriptive prose. Gandolfi is a writer (unlike some Kindle authors) who creates vivid word pictures of his travels, the locations, people and his experiences, the majority related to his trip on his MC. Some complain of his injection of politics, but as he explains, he's relating the comments / concerns of those he talks with and the impact of the continent's bigger north American "brother" on Central and South America, for better or for worse. I found his narratives to be natural, and typical of those I have heard (and generally try to avoid) when traveling outside the U.S. (or Britain in his case). But most readers and easily dial that out and enjoy the travel narrative, with his problems and successes.

I love this book...Simon is an inspirational old duffer who has given me the inspiration to do my own long distance moto riding in Latin America at the age of 67! Very cool guy and author and I am anxiously awaiting his return trip to Mexico! Yay Simon!

Richard Edward Connell Jr. (1893 – 1949) was an American author and journalist, probably best remembered for his short story "The Most Dangerous Game". Connell was one of the most popular American short story writers of his time. He had equal success as a journalist and screenwriter and was nominated for an Academy Award in 1942 for best original story.

A masterfully crafted edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Winner of the 1924 O. Henry Memorial Prize for Best Short Story (the Pulitzer Prize for stories) The Most Dangerous Game, also known as "The Hounds of Zaroff," is quite a thrilling and twisting read, a work consisting of approximately 34 pages, give or take, depending on the edition you choose from.

In the dead of night, two men, Whitney and Sanger Rainsford (no relation), who are both avid hunters, are on a yacht. Sanger is a noted author on hunting and somewhat of a playboy. The two are looking at what appears to be an isolated island ominously nicknamed Ship-Trap Island. While looking out, they discuss the game of hunting and briefly the ethics of it, analyzing the concept of fear and death that animals must surely sense when they are caught in the range of the hunter's guns. While Whitney is more sympathetic and open-minded of what the animals must sense, Sanger is indifferent, saying only, ""...Who cares what a jaguar feels. Bah! They've no understanding." It is a belief he'll come to regret; they also talk about the territory's supposed evil reputation by way of sailor lore. With the discussion coming to a close, Whitney turns in, thus leaving Rainsford alone on the deck. Mulling over things, Rainsford hears shots coming from the island, and while straining to see better, he loses his balance and falls overboard. Via the current and his own swimming ability, he lands on Ship-Trap Island without anyone on the boat noticing his disappearance.

On the island, he encounters the suave yet diabolical General Zaroff, a man whose passion for hunting surpasses that of his own. However, Zaroff does not hunt animals of the four legged variety. Staying in his opulent and well furnished island manor, Rainsford becomes well rested and unknowingly fattened up, all prep work done by Zaroff who wants his preys to be well nourished and fully energized for the chase; as Zaroff explains his joy at hunting humans to Rainsford, he becomes deathly ill at the inhumanity of it all. Zaroff simply delights in pursuing people who will use their ingenuity, wits and determination to survive. "Throw-away" people, as he sees it, will not be missed, for they were created for the pleasure of the strong. He looks at people the way hunters look at animals. It is just that black and white with nothing in between. Being a hazy witness to one of these hunts, Rainsford immediately wants off the island, but it's just not that easy, for he has to partake of the horror like all the others if he wants his freedom. And chances are, with Zaroff's acute hunting ability, he will not leave, for Zaroff's hunting record is 100% perfect, no losses whatsoever. Can Rainsfords survive the three days of open hunting with a maniac who knows all and assumedly sees all? That's the thing.

The Most Dangerous Game was a thought-provoking read, because it can be applied to all aspects of hunting and trying to quench the endless thirst of that which we most want, be it power, materialism, sex, vanity, money, a laundry list attached to the human psyche that can be endlessly yearning and strategizing but never fulfilled.

Best Kindle Version Available at Time of Review

As far as the story, suffice it to say this is one of my favorite short stories. There are plenty of other reviews available concerning the content of the story, so I concern myself primarily with the presentation on the kindle.

Having first tried the other version available, The Most Dangerous Game - New Century Edition with DirectLink Technology, and finding that it had an unwelcome abundance of typos, I downloaded this version instead. Unlike the other version, this version actually breaks the text into paragraphs, this very welcome and make the story much more pleasant to read. There are two notes built in to the story as editorial comments on what certain words mean. Although these comments are unnecessary to the understanding of the story, they are not unwelcome. The biggest plus is that I haven't noticed typos in this version like I did in the other version.

Overall, I think formatting is well done and works perfectly for the kindle. If you want to purchase this story for your kindle buy this version.

P.S. There is another reviewer of the kindle edition that mentions some of the text disappearing. I have not experienced this problem. It's possible this problem did exist and was fixed, but the problem isn't there anymore.

A moralistic classic of fiction.

I was required to read this story as part of my mandatory college curriculum. I found the story very intriguing and spotted with divine wisdom. The story views hunting and obsession in a new light. The story was written in 1924, but still feels modern showing the author's stretch for new thinking. I do not find the author's prose to be very smooth or grammatically perfect, but he does have something to say.
If your looking for a good collection of short stories to read, I recommend reading 'The Norton Introduction to Literature Fiction'

Solid introduction for beginning to intermediate players

To begin, a bit about my perspective for your own comparison. I've been playing paintball for about a year, own my own equipment, and usually play twice a month. I would probably think of myself as a beginning to intermediate level player. I play on organized fields and I play mostly woodsball, some speedball to mix it up a bit. I thought this book was a good primer for the beginning to intermediate level player. What I particularly liked about this book is that it focused on tactics and some strategy for paintball. It doesn't pretend that paintball is the same thing as real military combat like other books I have read. It gives you practical advise on how to win, and it is rather straight forward and doesn't get too wordy or technical. You have the basics like learning to move on the field and basic team communication, to more involved tactics on how to flank an opponent and how to properly cover a teammate. The only reason I give 4 and not 5 stars is because it could have been a bit longer and gotten to some more complex strategies for advanced players. For the beginning or casual paintballer, though, it gives you plenty of tools to start learning how to win.

A great book that goes into detail about tactics, individual skills and drills. Much better than other books that are just copies of military field manuals that are filled with information that has no use on the paintball field.

Brilliant, Suspenseful!

A fantastic sci-fi read! I had read all of Octavia Butler's works, and after researching similar artist settled on this book. It's a slow beginning but once it builds there's no putting it down! I'm immediately downloading other works in this series & by this writer. My Soul to Keep is full of beautiful, painful, genuine imagination and African cultural contexts which only increases the beauty.

Definitely recommend for those who love Octavia!

Thinkin' Fiction -- the Ancient African

It baffles me why some folks want to force Ms. Due to be a horror writer. She is absolutely not, and this is why I love her work. She incorportes realism, with myticism, the supernatural, but not horror. The people live very real lives, but have some quirks about them. Ms. Due write fiction with depth. She makes you think, and is an excellent, imaginative storyteller.

I feel like David and Jessica are members of my family. Every sistah needs a David/Dawit, of course, minus his indiscretions and personality deficits. If you are looking for a great love story, thrown in for good measure, murder, secrets, suspense, and the unbelievable, why My Soul to Keep is for you.

I discovered Mrs. Due a couple of years ago by accident. I was in the library one day and I saw this book with this very menacing cover. Out of curiosity, I opened the book and began to read. I was hooked. It was love at first sight. Imagine my utter joy when I discovered that The Living Blood was a Sequel to My Soul to Keep. Immediately, I returned to the library a few weeks later and checked out My Soul to Keep. I kept that book for almost 6 weeks. At that point, I knew I had to have my own copies for my library.

This is a love, suspense, supernatural thriller. David and Jessica are a happily married couple. Actually, Jessica has counted herself so lucky in meeting a fantastic man so early in her life. In comparison to so many sisters, where the pool of viable & desirable marriage partners is very shallow, she has a good man. She could not have asked for a better man. He is a great provider, husband, lover and father. Unbeknownst to Jessica, Dawit/David has a secret. When it is discovered, all hell breaks loose.

The book is so well written and highly imaginative. Mrs. Due makes you believe the unbelievable, that immortals inhabitant the earth and live among mortals. She is an excellent story teller. What also attracts me to her is she is obviously well-versed in African American history. On the sneak, she gives the reader a history lesson.

I also appreciate the fact that the black men are fully developed human beings, not caricatures. I know many sistahs would love to have a man like Dawit. He is everything a woman could ask for - well almost.

This is not a vampire story, though I love them. This is about human beings, with no supernatural powers. They just want permanently kick da bucket. Jessica doesn't realize her man is way older than he says. 30? Yeah right? Enjoy! The saga begins.

I love this author. More people need to know who she is.

Smart, Sexy and Scary

"My Soul to Keep" is an engaging read by Tananarive Due. Jessica has married the perfect man. David is a brilliant Jazz scholar, author of several books, handsome, sexy and a wonderful father...but unbeknownst to Jessica, David is also an immortal being with a dark past and possibly even darker present.

The dialogue is strong and even though the premise is way out there, Due's storytelling ability is such that suspension of disbelief is not a problem. Incidentally, this story is a surprisingly accurate symbol for what happens in long term relationships; at some point we all experience(in the immortal words of Billy Joel) the Stranger that kicks us right between the eyes...that time when we see something in our partner that is so foreign that it seems that we never knew them at all. Jessica begins to suspect that there is a hidden secret in her beloved David and Due's descriptions of Jessica's personal denials and pendulum like emotions concerning her husband are brilliant. Most of us that have been married for some time have experienced that and the author manages to harness that natural feeling of anxiety and uses it in "My Soul to Keep". Whether Ms. Due has done this intentionally or not (I suspect she has though) doesn't really matter.

"My Soul to Keep" could fit into a half dozen genre's and whether you like horror, science fiction, romance or action/adventure you will enjoy "My Soul to Keep".
