A Problem Solving Fable

Fables have been used to illustrate problem solving, among many other things, for hundreds of years. Remember Aesop's fables? Several years ago, Kenneth Blanchard successfully re-introduced using fables to teach problem solving techniques with his book, Who Moved My Cheese. John Kotter replicated that method of instruction with this fun little book, OUR ICEBERG IS MELTING. As with the aforementioned work, I believe this one will garner similar acclaim.

Kotter's engaging story introduces the 8 principles of problem solving. This can be used in a variety of venues from business, church, child raising, sports, etc. Kotter illustrates how the penguins, faced with a tumultuous dilemma, identified the problem, created urgency, developed a team-building structure, and stepped outside the box. Along the way, the story is entertaining and includes a diverse array of skepticism, cynicism and other challenges that we all face.

The book is also very well illustrated and can easily be read in a couple of hours. It is also readable for almost any age level and would probably make a good reading lesson for children as well. They will certainly be entertained, if not captivated by the illustrations and side notes. Well done.

Creative yet uninspiring

Started reading this book when all was relevant. Tried to finish it twice now and just can't get through to the end. Lack of interest, I guess. I really like John Kotter's books and have read others. I think I just get tired of having to relate the penguins to real-life characters I know. But it's an entertaining read so far. Will get back to it in the future just to "finish."

This story was a great example of how to form a cohesive community, whether it be at work, in your home, etc. I read this for an assignment in my Foundations of Management class at the University of Iowa and I would recommend this to any leader as every leader has room to grow.

Francis D.K. Ching is Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of Washington. He is the author or coauthor of numerous architecture and design books, including Architectural Graphics; Architecture: Form, Space, and Order; A Global History of Architecture; Interior Design Illustrated; and Building Construction Illustrated, all from Wiley.

Design Drawing a good beginning

As a beginning architecture student I found the book to be most helpful. It contains excellent illustations on shading and shadow techniques, and on developing architectural perspectives. The CD-rom version is especially helpful in explaining some of the basic concepts. I would highly recomend this book to those interested in design architecture.

it wouldn't be too much to say that this is one of the best books written for this purpose. the smooth transition from chapter to another and the gradual develpoment of skills and concepts makes reading through the book both exciting and benefitial. specially the chapters regarding perspective drawing. it gives u all the points and nearly every thing u might bump into. For those seeking to improve their drawing skills, this is ONE book u cannot miss.

About the Author
Nancy Tye-Murray is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and an Adjunct Professor at New Zealand's University of Canterbury. A founder of the University of Iowa Cochlear Implant Aural Rehabilitation Programs, she also served as Director of Research for Central Institute for the Deaf. In addition to developing several communication strategies training programs, auditory training programs, and speechreading tests, Dr. Tye-Murray is the principle investigator of three National Institutes of Health RO1 grants. Her research focuses on the effects of aging on audiovisual speech recognition, discourse comprehension, and auditory training, as well as audiovisual speech processing by children who have normal and impaired hearing. The author of six books and more than 100 peer-reviewed research papers, Dr. Tye-Murray is also a popular speaker both nationally and internationally.

Even better than the first

Tye-Murray has bettered her first effort with this second edition of "Foundations of Aural Rehabilitation: Children, Adults, and Their Family Members." I used the first edition for my introduction to AR class for years, and find this one even more useful. The prose is interesting and clear, the graphics are very useful for teaching purposes. This is a text that I tell my students to hang on to and not re-sale to the bookstore. Once they graduate, they will return to it over and over again.

1970s edition is great

Well, this review is pending of the fact that the text was only made better with time and further editions, but the 1970s edition is very good. It is a lucid and rigourus treatment of electromagnetics, and includes at least 140 examples, which i feel is an important learning mechanism. Some texts don't have examples or contain a very sparse selection of them, i find this appaling. In my opinion the book is right up there with David Griffiths' text. They make a good duo and it would behoove someone to obtain both of these great texts. Not necessarily because Electromagnetics is hard, but sometimes Griffiths leave out information that is pertinent to answer some of his question. This book provides those.

Paul Lorrain's Electromagnetic Fields and Waves

Readers should start a campaign to reprint and/or get a new edition of this book. Professor Paul Lorrain is not only a recipient of the Legion of Honor of France and the equivalent of Montreal, Canada, but his book is a work of CREATIVE GENIUS. His problems contain very interesting applications of electromagnetism which both the public and specialists can identify with, including magnetic monopoles (very strange theoretical entities with only one pole instead of the usual north and south poles of magnets - see my reviews of Kursunoglu, Frolov, Klapdor-Kleingothaus, etc.) that are predicted by physics Grand Unified Theories, superconductors which have turned out to have remarkably important uses today (and the ferromagnetism which is closely related to them), the earth's magnetic field which is related to modern geophysics, hysteresis which is related to an important modern branch of nonlinear mathematics as well, artificial satellites which are so important today, solar wind which is extremely important today, and even the theory of continuous creation of electric charge. In addition, there are many chapters on electromagnetics in relativity (see my reviews of Weinberg and Misner et al.), Maxwell's equations, magnetic fields, electric fields, plane electromagnetic waves (see my review of A. Bohm), guided waves, radiation. Lorrain makes electromagnetism interesting, open minded on new ideas, and interdisciplinary, all characteristics of Creative Genius. The general public should also hire consultants or tutors to summarize this book or even teach it to them - it is well worth the effort because its ideas apply to fields far beyond physics. It should be mentioned that Lorrain et al give excellent summaries in the book, but the general reader might want some of them translated into closer to elementary mathematics or even approximately English.

This, along with Griffiths' Introduction to Electromagnetism, is without a doubt the BEST introductory book on the subject ever written!

Clear, well organized, with numerous awesome figures -- easy to read, understand, and learn from.

A true gem of a book!
