Don't buy unless you are a beginner and just want to learn the fundamentals of SEO.

No point in buying this book. SEO is changing so rapidly that by the time a book is published, it's already outdated. What I can say about this is if you do buy it (honestly don't pay more than $10 for it), than it does provide a good foundation for understanding what SEO is and the purpose of it. After that, you're better off reading various blogs and researching case studies online.

Excellent Resource

This is an exceptional resource that I should have read much earlier in my web career. I own and operate two businesses that are predominantly driven through web traffic, and have relied exclusively on outsourced SEO. This book provides ANYONE who has a website and relies on it for their livelihood to gain enough knowledge to effectively manage their vendors, if not enough to handle the basics in-house. The book was written about 5 years ago - after the last "big wave" of changes in how Google ranks and the Bing/Yahoo combo for search. Based on what I know, the information and approach is still solid. While the vendors and some of the tactics have changed - and the pace of change on the web is extreme - the book hits the spot.

Great Book to Begin SEO Journey!

I am a co-founder of a fiancial services website and wanted an introductory book on SEO. I was only familar with Adwords at the time. I wanted a book to provide me with a foundation of knowledge of all of the basic concepts of SEO and how to further expand my study. Not too technical that I couldn't understand it, but not too simple that would provide no value. I also did not want a book which sugar-coated the ease and effectiveness of SEO. This book delieved. I highly recommend to anyone beginning their exploration of SEO to buy and read this book. I plan on reading the book a second time, to take extensive notes to reference for further study.

About the Author
Roy F. Baumeister is currently the Eppes Eminent Scholar and Professor of Psychology at Florida State University. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from Princeton in 1978 and did a postdoctoral fellowship in sociology at the University of California at Berkeley. He spent over two decades at Case Western Reserve University. He has also worked at the University of Texas, the University of Virginia, the Max-Planck-Institute, the VU Free University of Amsterdam, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Russell Sage Foundation, the University of Bamberg (Germany), and Stanford's Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. Baumeister's research spans multiple topics, including self and identity, self-regulation, interpersonal rejection and the need to belong, sexuality and gender, aggression, self-esteem, meaning, and self-presentation. He has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health and from the Templeton Foundation. He has over 500 publications, and his 31 books include EVIL: INSIDE HUMAN VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY, THE CULTURAL ANIMAL, MEANINGS OF LIFE, and the New York Times bestseller WILLPOWER: REDISCOVERING THE GREATEST HUMAN STRENGTH. The Institute for Scientific Information lists him among the handful of most cited (most influential) psychologists in the world. He has received several major awards, including the William James Fellow award (their highest honor) from the Association for Psychological Science, and the Jack Block Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology.

Brad J. Bushman is a professor of communication and psychology at The Ohio State University, where he holds the Margaret Hall and Robert Randal Rinehart Chair of Mass Communication. He is also a professor of communication science at the VU University Amsterdam, the Netherlands in the summer. For about 30 years he has conducted research on the causes, consequences, and solutions to the problem of human aggression and violence. He co-chaired the National Science Foundation youth violence advisory committee that was formed in the wake of the Newtown school shooting. He also is a member of President Obama's committee on gun violence. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles. According to Google Scholar, his articles have been cited over 25,000 times. He is ranked #2 in citations among communication scholars. In 2013 he received the 2013 Ig Nobel Psychology Prize (signed by three Nobel Laureates) for research with French colleagues titled "'Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder': People who think they are drunk also think they are attractive." In 2014 he received the Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Media Psychology and Technology, American Psychological Association. His research has challenged several myths (e.g., violent media have a trivial effect on aggression, venting anger reduces aggression, violent people suffer from low self-esteem, violence and sex on TV sell products, warning labels reduce audience size). One colleague calls him the "myth buster." His research has been published in the top scientific journals (e.g., Science, PNAS), and has been featured extensively in the mass media (e.g., BBC, New York Times, NPR).

Material is easy to understand and is repeated throughout the book. The examples are very memorable making it easy to recall for tests. There are a number of experiments that are mentioned without the mention of the authors of the study. This may be important for any class, so as you are reading, be sure to make notes of who conducted the study (which is listed at the back of the book).

About the Author

Dr. Diane Larsen-Freeman is a Professor of Education and Director of the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She is also Distinguished Senior Faculty Fellow at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. She has spoken and published widely on the topics of teacher education, second language acquisition, English grammar, and language teaching methodology. In 1997, Dr. Larsen-Freeman was inducted into the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1999, she was named one of the ESL pioneers by ESL Magazine. In 2000, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Heinle and Heinle Publishers.

A good overview, but light on critical analysis.

This is a great introduction to all of the various methods of teaching foreign languages. The author writes clearly about what kind of principles and ideas form the foundation of various methods and approaches. She details which theories of language and learning and which goals are deemed important by proponents of each method. She describes a typical lesson in different settings around the world for each chapter and method which becomes the core of each chapter.

Although an easy and informative read, I found that the author was incredibly reluctant to make any criticism or praise on any of the methods. I would have found this book more useful if the author had brought to light what criticisms have been made of each method and if possible what its proponents have said in defending it. Also it would have been especially nice to hear about what research has been done (if applicable) on the efficacy of each method.

The author claims that the aim of the book is to inform teachers about other methods and the principles that undermine them, so that readers can make use of these in a 'principally eclectic' way. So I can see why she avoided critically undermining the approaches introduced in the book. However, I feel that my own ability to make these choices would have been enhanced by a more critical analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

It's a solid introduction for beginners, but definitely left me wanting more.

Surprise! A useful TESOL textbook!

This book clearly lays out various TESOL methodologies, one per chapter, and each chapter follows the same clear and concise structure. Relatively light on the tedious, commercially-driven filler that usually afflicts most TESOL textbooks.

This is Diane Larsen Freeman (one of THE high priestesses of the whole TESOL industry/field) at her best. Clearly written for the real world of classroom teachers and teachers-in-training, rather than to impress and befuddle her peers in academia like much of her theoretical Second Language Acquisition writings.

Highly useful resource

This was the required text for an online course that I recently took. The outstanding feature was the approach to exemplifying and clarifying each of the teaching methods treated. Each chapter presented a narrative of the actual happenings in a class where a given method was in use. This was followed by a chart which paired the specific teaching actions to an underlying principle. The end of each chapter was a series of 10 questions, particularly relevant to the TESOL situation (i.e: What are the goals? How is culture viewed? How are errors dealt with?, What is the role of students' native language?). This approach makes the key information and concepts more likely to be understood and remembered, without 'watering down' any of the subject matter.

Farrell looks at the group dynamics in six collaborative circles: the French Impressionists; Sigmund Freud and his friends; C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Anthony, and the "Ultras" in the women's movement; the Fugitive poets; and the writers Joseph Conrad, Ford Maddox Ford, and their friends. Farrell presents vivid narrative accounts of the development of each circle and the roles each member played. He considers how circles form; how the leadership, group rituals, and interpersonal relations change as circles develop; how the dynamics of circles stimulate creative work; and why some circles flourish while others flounder.

About the Author
Michael P. Farrell is a professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is the coauthor of Small Groups Episodes and Men at Midlife.

In 2011 Yassmin graduated with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (First Class Honours) and in 2012 she was named Young Leader of the Year in the Australian Financial Review and Westpac's inaugural 100 Women of Influence Awards as well as an InStyle cultural leader and a Marie Claire woman of the future.

Yassmin has now been awarded Youth of the Year in the Australian Muslim Achievement Awards.

About the Author
Yassmin Abdel-Magied is the 2015 Queensland Young Australian of the Year, as well as a mechanical engineer, social advocate, writer, and petrol head. At 16, Yassmin Abdel-Magied founded Youth Without Borders, an organization focused on enabling young people to work for positive change in their communities. In 2012 she was named Young Leader in the Australian Financial Review and Westpac’s inaugural 100 Women of Influence Awards. She graduated top of her university year in 2011 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (First Class Honours), and was a recipient of the University of Queensland’s Dean’s Excellence scholarship. In 2007, Yassmin was named Young Australian Muslim of the Year for her work in the community and in 2010 Young Queenslander of the Year. She serves on various state and federal councils and is currently works as an engineering specialist on oil and gas rigs.

Everyone has a story, but is it a story worth remembering?

This is navel-gazing, social justice warrior biography, written by a young woman, is part of the cultural appropriation genre. White people cannot understand black people, men cannot understand women, Christians cannot understand Muslims. That is the mantra. Such views are nothing by neo-racism. Fragile people are condemned into a life of hierarchy and government hired social councillors of the right race-gender-religion. The newspeak is scary, but I guess the author would find 1984 too scary to read. Of course as a black woman, she would probably never understand a white man that lived more than half a century ago. And so history repeats itself

If you're looking for a good, read I highly recommend this book

As I was writing my study of religion assignment on Islam and identity, my older sister presented me with this book. Yassmin's book was incredibly helpful at understanding the upbringing and lifestyle of a young Muslim girl growing up in Australia, while also learning about her values and strong Islamic faith. She has achieved so much!
If you're looking for a good, read I highly recommend this book.

Reading Yassmin's Story

This is one of the fastest reads I've had in a long time. In this memoir, 24-year-old Yassmin tells of her experiences as an immigrant to Australia from Sudan. Her experiences are magnified by the fact that she is a Muslim woman who chooses to wear the hijab.

Yassmin is able to share her experiences in a candid, easy style. She shares on a granular level how her parents' lives were changed by the overthrow of the democratic government. She shares what led them to leave their family, home and country.

Yassmin shares observations of different forms of bias and oppression that affect Muslim women in western society. She shares this without bitterness. She gives what can be considered an alternate point of view of Islam and women's choices and freedoms.

It was a pleasure to read this young woman's positive outlook and positive accomplishments. It's eye opening to see and understand more clearly how systems appear to someone with a different point of view. It is refreshing to be reminded of the gifts of privilege that often goes unacknowledged.
