I’m a big fan of Lynn Hagen, even though I haven’t read many of her books. There are so many, it’ll take me a lifetime to read them all. When I saw His Road to Sam released I was excited to read it, even though it was book five of the Shifters of Mystery series and I hadn’t read the prior books. Turns out I should’ve read the others first.

You don’t have to read all the series before this one, but I think it would help a great deal. There are many characters who I assume were introduced in the other books. Since I didn’t know these guys I lacked the connection to care about them I probably would’ve possessed had I read the entire series.

Sheriff Sam Reese has been tortured by a crazy man and turned into some sort of super werewolf. I never really understood the reasoning behind this or why the bad guy, Martin, did this or why he hated his son Sage, a supporting character, so much.

Pat is in love with Sam and wants to help him recover from the abuse he suffered at Martin’s hands. Sam is understandably reluctant to let anyone get close to him, afraid the creature inside him will hurt someone. Pat doesn’t give up and slowly gets past Sam’s defense.

Even without understanding everything going on, I did get Sam and Pat’s relationship. Sam’s pain was palpable as were Pat’s feelings for the sheriff. The first time they have sex is scorching hot. It’s raw and visceral with Sam’s inner creature warring for control and Pat willing to give him what he needs, to a point.

I had a few niggles with some grammar mistakes including using their instead of they’re. There was also some repetitive dialogue with Pat saying more than once that he’d fallen in Sam at first sight.

Here’s another example of redundant dialogue.

Infuriatingly frustrated, Pat kicked a rock. “See how pissed I am. I’m beating up rocks.”

Sometimes words aren’t need to express a character’s emotions and often just the actions speak louder.

This book wasn’t as good as the other I’ve read, but I’m not sure if it’s because I haven’t read the entire series or not.

A Rocky Road full of Potholes

What happened to Sam is so terrible we don't even get told everything that occurred. What we do know is that he was put on display on a heavy bdsm (actually - torture) website Martin's House of Horrors. He's naked hanging by chained wrists in a basement / dungeon where he is being tortured by Sage's crazy Alpha father, Martin. His unclaimed mate Pat is hysterical. Practically out of his mind with worry. He wavers between cooking everyone's favorite meals & desserts and shutting down or acts of misplaced anger.

A rescue is organized by the Shifters of Mystery. Sheriff Sam is one of theres. They feel very guilty because they know Martin wouldn't have targeted Sam if he weren't associated with them. But what condition will Sam be in? Will he be able to recover from what was done to him? Will he want to? Afterall the Sheriff is Human or at least he was... now no one's quite sure how the combination of injections Sam received exactly has effected him. One thing known is that Sam is furious at all Paranormal creatures.

This story is about how Sam and the Shifters of Mystery deal with his new Self. Does Pat get a say in what happens? Will the former Sheriff accept him as his mate? How everyone feels about Sam now needing the protection of the Mayor and the rest of Mysterys Shifters?

Of course Mad Martin and his Horrible Henchmen don't just sit there and allow his son and crew to steal his best experiment. Somebody really needs to take out the squirrely Alpha Wolf shifter. We finally learn what has happened with Sage's mother. What about the rest of the Pack? If the Alpha is terrorizing the residents of Mystery and the surrounding areas who is taking care of the Pack?

Why are Sage, his friends, and their Mates so determined to remain in Mystery especially after being relentlessly pursued by Hunters and other shifters? What is so great about Mystery that's worth all the blood, sweat, and tears? The Shifters of Mystery went there for Sanctuary and have ended up being persecuted, hunted, shot, kidnapped, experimented on, and experienced broken hearts. I woud've packed up and left.

I look forward to York and Monterey's romance. Hopefully they have an easier time than their fellow Mystery shifters and mates.

I really looked forward to this book I was kind of on the fence about this series I liked ok burning guess I don't really understand it I get that the dad is nuts and but why bc his son is gay I wish that in these kind of book they spent a couple chapters on the enemy and have them at out some of the plan dose the book have to be so short it's not a tv show where u only have 30 min to watch I rated this book high because of the end other wise I would of said 2 stars we didn't even get to read any of the torture that sam went through.
