The Art Of Jack Kirby - paperback edition

The book is an illustrated over-view of the career of Jack "King" Kirby (creator & co-creator of more comics & comic book characters than you can shake a stick at). The bok does not provide a critique, or in-depth study of the development of Kirby's art, or tackle any of the thorny subjects of comic-book industry politics, copyright ownership, gossip & hear-say. Nor does it feature in-depth interviews with Kirby & his associates (there is a scattering of short quotes from Kirby & a number of excerts from Joe Simon's The Comic Book Makers).
There's much to recommend -
1) The large format, about 34x24cm, means that you will never have seen many of these pictures at this size, nearly twice the size of a US comic!
2) The coverage of Kirby's early career, though brief, is excellent, & easily the high-point of the book.
3) The illustrations. There's a wealth of rare photos of a young Jack Kirby, illustrations, editorial cartoons, newspaper strips, early comic book pages, & rare private pieces. And a stunning full page collage in colour!
4) The Jack Kirby Booklist! The first attempt to catalogue all of Jack Kirby's work that ever saw print. This list is arranged alphabetically & chronologically, & forms the basis for the later checklists from the Jack Kirby Collector. Pretty much essential if you want to make sure you aren't missing anything.
But the book is not perfect -
1) It's way too short to do justice to such a prolific, successful & long career (over 50 years & over 20,000 pages!). The authors, Wyman & Hohlfeld, skim through much of Kirby's career, so you may find that some of your favourites don't get mentioned (his 70's runs on Captain America & Black Panther get 1 small picture of a cover) .
2) The quality of some of the illustrations. Some of the full page photos of old comic book covers look kinda fuzzy, & there's an annoying amount of photos of covers & pages printed slightly larger than thumbpriints, which seems kinda pointless.
3) There is a definite lack of pencil art, it would've been nice to see more raw Kirby before the inkers work.
4) That cover! What were they thinking? Much as I enjoyed The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kevin Eastman does not do Kirby's pencils justice.
Overall this is a book for the hard-core fan/collector, & works best in conjunction with the volumes of The Collected Jack Kirby Collector (which fill in much of the gaps in this book). But the book is more about what Kirby did when, rather than about his Art.

Fantastic book

Jack Kirby was viewed by many to be the greatest comic artist who ever worked in the field and as of today, this is the best, most complete volume of his work. Informative text and loads and loads of art.

A Real Treasure of Jack Kirby's Work

Wow, such a book! It's large, fully illustrated with the King's artwork. Beautifully printed on substantial paper worthy of Mr. Kirby. A real treasure.
