Pretty dumb

The topic IS interesting, which is the only reason I've read parts of this book. It's written for men so they can learn to appreciate their bodies and not be ashamed of them. I am female and bought it for my boyfriend, but I've read more than he has.
This is because this guy is a horrible writer. Not an enjoyable read. Prepare to cringe on every page at corny, weird jokes that you are embarrassed to be reading. No, it's not because they're about penises (or penii, as the author might point out). It's just really cheesy. And far too few of the facts are actually interesting in their own right. There are much more interesting penile facts out there. The most engaging part was where the author asked a bunch of guys how they felt about their penises, which consisted of several pages of guys with giant schlongs expressing that they were unsure about whether they were adequate or could even please a woman (I'm talking 8-inch plus here). That is sad, actually, that so many boys are so ashamed. And the author appears to care and wants to make a difference in these men's lives, which was the impetus for the creation of this book, but he seriously missed his own mark. Rather than delving into the topic and actually explaining to guys that society is brainwashing them into believing they are inadequate and explaining that the average vagina is 5 or 6 inches deep, he says something to the effect of "Huh, isn't it interesting this is what guys think about their d***s. Anyway..."
I would advise against this purchase unless it is 99 cents and is a gag gift.

Funny, meaningful and downright brilliant

What a terrific book! As a fan of Richard Herring's work, and particularly the clever and engaging RHLSTP series (and a great little business model behind all that funny) I was a little nervous about his ability to write a self- proclaimed riposte to the Vagina Monologues. I mean, Herring does a great line in slightly juvenile and deliciously rude comedy, so I bought this expecting just a selection of cock and balls joke. And I was so wrong.
Herring has actually done pretty much exactly what he set out to do. His research on the male member is outstanding- and covers a wide swathe of history in just the right amount of detail- and you may well find yourself looking for the further readings he provides, as he is great at showing the fascinating side of the veal dagger as a social modifier. On top of that, Herring is writing with a really equitable voice- this isn't some chauvinistic drenched tome, but a really balanced view. In his extremely interesting analysis of the stats and comments collected from his survey that forms the basis of this project, he is not scared to highlight boorish and unacceptable attitudes (from male and female respondents), but even better, he gives you that sense that gay, straight cock owner, cock lover or both at once, we're all on the same side here. It's actually genuinely thoughtful and at times, moving stuff.
My only reservation is a small one. My wife found that Herrings' constant creative use of synonyms and euphemisms for penis a bit wearing and juvenile, and this did make it hard for her to see the depth here. Personally I loved all of it, but I would recommend you see past the tallywhacker/beef spear/wonder weasel references- because this really is a top read.
